School is back in session in the Osseo School District and Park Center High School student Kai Hui is already hard at work in his social science class.
The 17-year-old senior from Brooklyn Park has a passion for the sciences and he loves taking a creative approach to scientific questions.
"You have to be more open--minded and think of different ways to solve things," said Hui.
Park Center chemistry teacher Marilyn Trouth say Hui is the kind of student every teacher wants in class.
"He's got strong natural ability, but he's willing to work hard too," said Trouth. "He's willing to push himself and take those higher level courses."
Elected by his classmates to serve as a leader in student government, Hui is a member of National Honor Society with a 3.8 grade point average. Hui's teachers say he's the kind of student that works hard and goes after any assignment he's given.
"My father taught me that if you're going to do something, you better do it right and you better get it done on time," said Hui.
Hui applies that drive and determination to volunteering too. Since 2012, he's given 358 hours of his time to volunteer at Hennepin County Medical Center.
"I work for the food shelf, and I'm also part of the summer meals program for children," said Hui.
For his volunteering hours and efforts, Hui recently earned him the gold level Presidential Volunteer Service Award.
"I think it's unique in a high school student to be so mature and think beyond yourself as much as Kai does," said Trouth.
With just a few months left of high school, Hui is about to turn the page on a new chapter. He plans to study pre-med in college at the University of Minnesota.
